Dillonna Lewis

Dillonna Lewis Interview
Dillonna Lewis & Cynthia Tobar

Raised by her grandparents in the Eastern Caribbean, Dillonna Lewis was 15 years old when she first came to the United States.  Upon her arrival, Dillonna and her older sister joined their parents who had, in an effort to gain economic and educational traction unavailable on their small home island of St. Vincent, emigrated to the US while Dillonna was still in her infancy.  In this interview, Dillonna recounts her early experiences in the United States, the family’s struggles with acculturation, the impact of her parent’s divorce and the lasting influence of a strongly matriarchal lineage that placed high value on education and activism.  Dillonna speaks of these influences as “the phenomena of womanism”, particularly as it relates to her family and to the mission of WRI.

A graduate of Bucknell College and Columbia University, Dillonna’s has diligently promoted social justice through collaborative, consensus-seeking, culturally competent and community-oriented intervention.  She discusses her approach on behalf of high-risk, under-served and marginalized communities as one which bridges mental health, education, community organization, macro-practice and advocacy with the goal of fostering change in individuals, families, communities, service models and public policy that promote lasting positive and holistic growth.

Dillonna recounts in detail her 15 year tenure with the Welfare Rights Initiative at Hunter College.  She reflects upon joining the project at the completion of its pilot year in 1997, the growth and development of the program and WRI’s recent efforts to advance state legislation which would be consistent with existing federal legislation that prevents recipients of public assistance to lose their benefits upon enrollment in a 4-year college program.
