Mayzabeth Lopez

Mayzabeth Lopez Interview
Mayzabeth Lopez & Cynthia Tobar

Mayzabeth Lopez, better known as Ginger Lopez, recognized that higher education would provide the means to break free from an early life of poverty and family struggles. In this interview, Ginger talks about her transformation by way of her work with the Welfare Rights Initiative.

Through WRI, Ginger learned about the untold rights regarding access to higher education for students on welfare and was compelled to propagate that information. Sharing common life stories with peers and taking part in leadership training and public speaking were motivating forces. Ginger attributes her philosophy of leadership to WRI, learning the importance of bringing people together and mentoring them so that they believe in their ability to take action that will effect change. She saw the benefit of this style after two years of collaborating with other organizers and lawyers led to discussions with senators and assemblymen. The result was the passing of the law that allows internships and work-study to count so that students could support their education and not have to leave school. WRI instilled a belief in lifelong learning; Ginger earned a bachelor’s degree and would like to continue her education. She hopes to set an example for her son so that he sees that education is ongoing.
